The Porcelain Veneers Process
The dental veneer process will require several visits to our Charlottesville, VA dentist office. At the first appointment, Dr. Harrison will examine your teeth to determine if you qualify for porcelain veneers.
If your teeth are free from any major dental problems then we will schedule your next appointment. If you have dental problems such as tooth decay or gum disease, they will need to be treated first.
At your next visit, Dr. Harrison will prepare your teeth by removing a very thin layer of enamel. He will then take dental impressions that a dental lab will use to make your custom tooth veneers. Finally at your last visit, Dr. Harrison will bond the veneers to the front and sides of the teeth being treated. He will make any necessary adjustments to ensure a perfect appearance.
What is the Difference Between a Porcelain Veneer and a Dental Crown?
A porcelain veneer only lies on the front-facing part of your tooth. It conceals your tooth but does not entirely replace it. A dental crown is designed as a cap to fit over the foundational core of your tooth, meaning that it replaces the complete exterior of your tooth.
How Should I Care for my Porcelain Veneers?
You should care for your veneers just as you would your natural teeth. Remember to continue brushing and flossing regularly as your natural teeth are still underneath the veneers and need to be taken care of. If you are interested in teeth whitening solutions, make sure you mention your veneers beforehand as they will not respond to any bleaching agents.
We recommend having your teeth whitened before you receive your veneers because your veneers will be designed to match the current color of your natural teeth.
My Veneer Fell Off…What Should I Do?
If your veneer falls off, we recommend trying to locate the veneer if possible. Bring it with you to your next dental appointment. Call our office immediately after your veneer falls off, and we will have you come in so we can inspect the veneer and determine if we can fix it or order you a new one.
How Long do Porcelain Veneers Last?
Porcelain veneers are highly durable and can last for 10-15 years and longer with good oral hygiene and regular dental care. Dr. Harrison will monitor the condition of your veneers during a routine dental exam to address any damage or concerns as early as possible.
