Reasons For Needing a Dental Crown

A dental crown serves many restorative and cosmetic purposes. If any of the following pertain to you, Dr. Harrison will discuss the possibility of securing a tooth crown.

  • Fix a broken or fractured tooth
  • Cosmetically enhance a tooth’s appearance
  • Protect and strengthen a decayed tooth
  • Replace a fractured filling
  • Protect and strengthen a tooth after root canal therapy
  • Act as a replacement tooth and secured to a dental implant

What Should I Expect During My Dental Crown Appointments?

The dental crown procedure usually takes two appointments. The first appointment involves preparing the affected tooth for the crown. We will shape down your tooth to its foundational core. Then, we will take dental impressions of the tooth to send off to our labs for the creation of your custom dental crown.

In the meantime, you will be provided a temporary crown to wear.  Once your crown is complete, we will call you back in to place your dental crown using dental cement.

How Should I Care For My Dental Crown?

You should care for your dental crown by continuing to practice your best oral hygiene routine. Brush and floss your dental crown just as you would your natural teeth. Continue to schedule regular oral health and wellness visits so that we may monitor your dental crown and ensure that it and your remaining natural tooth structure is healthy.

Is the Dental Crown Procedure Painful?

Patients are typically numbed during the dental crown procedure to avoid pain or discomfort. You may feel some slight soreness after the procedure, but nothing that shouldn’t go away within a few days. If you are especially nervous about your dental crown procedure, please let us know. We are happy to provide sedation dentistry options.

How Long Will My Dental Crown Last?

If you take good care of your dental crown, it can last up to 15 years. It is important to brush and floss your teeth every single day. Also, visit the dentist every six months for a proper teeth cleaning and a check up.
